Lune Aqueduct is one of the most impressive structures on our waterways, carrying the Lancaster Canal high above the River Lune on five huge stone arches – but the towpath remains closed following the development of a sinkhole at the beginning of June.
Residents are concerned by a lack of progress on reopening the walkway, only being aware that there will be an update by 10th July.
I’ve written to SP Electricity North West and Canal & River Trust to ask for some clarity on the timeframe, and for the works to be expedited.
UPDATE: 16th June 2026
Following my request that towpath repairs are expedited, the Canal and River Trust has confirmed that they are aiming to complete repairs in the next two weeks, subject to SP Electricity North West granting their consent.
The organisation has reiterated to me that safety is paramount, and the presence of a 1m-deep hole in the towpath immediately over high voltage cables has meant that closing the towpath was the only safe option, and that repeated vandalism of the fencing and signage meant delays to the ringfencing and securing the area for investigation and repair.
As the aqueduct is a stunning part of our local tourism offer as well as an everyday connection between two sides of the city, I’m delighted that we now have a sense of when this iconic structure will be fully reopened, giving residents and visitors peace of mind that by early July we should see the path back open.
