Last week I visited The Gregson to join an important conversation about children and smartphones.

This is a growing issue in Westminster, as we look at what more can be done to reduce harm and ensure young people are able to enjoy their childhood without the pressures that come with social media, especially at a time when youth mental health is at crisis point.

Of course, smartphones bring real benefits, from safety and staying connected to accessing useful information. But it’s clear we need to strike a better balance.

It was a real privilege to hear from Molly, aged 14, who has made the switch from a smartphone to a simple Nokia “brick” phone. Molly spoke so eloquently about the positive impact this has had, finding freedom from constant notifications and rediscovering hobbies once enjoyed.

We also heard about the growing “Parent Pact” movement. It was inspiring to see how many local parents and schools are getting involved, supporting each other to delay smartphones until at least age 14, and social media until 16. By acting together, we can reduce the pressure on both children and parents.

I’m really encouraged by this work and proud to support it. If you’d like to find out more or get involved, you can visit: https://www.smartphonefreechildhood.org/parent-pact
