This week, I had the opportunity to tour Heysham Power Station. While it’s not in my constituency, the impact of Heysham 1 & 2 on our local area is undeniable – creating jobs, supporting businesses, and fuelling economic growth.
Heysham provides reliable, clean, home-grown energy as part of the UK’s current fleet of nuclear power stations which met 13% of the country’s total power demand last year. Beyond keeping the lights on, Heysham makes a huge contribution to our economy. With around 1,050 full-time EDF employees and over 450 full-time contract partners, Heysham has collectively generated £28.9 billion in Gross Value Added for the UK so far. The UK’s current nuclear power stations as a whole have added £123 billion to the UK economy across their lifetimes and support 31,000 jobs annually.
The tour was both insightful and inspiring. I especially enjoyed meeting the apprentices at various stages of their learning. Hearing about the opportunities they’ve been given, the skills they’re developing, and the pride they take in their work was a real highlight. It’s clear EDF invests not only in energy but in people, with strong engagement in local schools and outreach programs.
If you’ve ever wondered what goes on inside the power stations you pass every day, I’d encourage you to book a tour and see for yourself. You can find out more and arrange a visit here: Heysham Power Station Tours
It was a fascinating visit, highlighting the importance of investing in clean energy, local skills, and opportunities for the next generation!
