Cat with Scorton Rose Queen Oona

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of crowning the Scorton Rose Queen, which was awarded to the amazing Oona this year.  The crowning of the Rose Queen is a historic tradition that Oona is adapting to 2023, with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Oona is passionate about environmental issues and has been inspired by environmental activists like Greta Thunberg since she was very little.

Through watching David Attenborough, Oona enjoys learning more about what is happening to the earth through global warming, and what steps we must take to tackle the climate emergency.

Oona is taking conscious steps to reduce her use of single use plastics and to reuse or recycle where possible. Also, like me, Oona loves to look around a charity shop. Through thinking about her role as the Rose Queen her parents challenged her to think about how she could do this in a more sustainable and ethical way. Oona decided that she wanted to avoid fast fashion across the whole Rose Queen event, and encouraged others to buy preloved items wherever possible, as well as her own outfit.

Oona fully deserves this recognition. It was great to see her in a smart pre-loved, trouser suit and not the traditional dress. Our traditions are great, but to keep them alive, we move with the times and Oona is doing this so well!
