Cat hoists the prestigious Green Flag

Congratulations to the pupils of Carter’s Primary School in Preesall who have been awarded the coveted Eco-School Green Flag.

I was proud to join them to hoist the new flag which marks several years of hard work led by some fantastic teachers.

To be awarded the Eco Schools green flag the youngsters form a student-led Eco Committee and they meet regularly to discuss environmental and social actions for the school. They’re also required to carry out a Sustainability Audit, helping the school to identify its current environmental and social impact and highlights were improvements can be made.

The youngsters go on to create an Action Plan to identify the necessary tasks, appoint the people responsible and a time frame for actions in order to achieve their goals and targets

They’re then encouraged to find out whether they are successfully achieving the targets by learning how to monitor, measure and evaluate their progress.

Much of the Eco-School programme is integrated into the curriculum so that pupils from throughout the school gain an understanding of how real life environmental and social issues are dealt with in a real life setting. It was great to visit the classrooms to see some of the projects the children are working on.

The Eco-Schools programme gives me hope that the generation of children I met today will do a better job of caring for the planet than previous generations. Progress starts in the classroom and this programme is so valuable in equipping pupils with the belief to know they can make a difference both in their own homes and in their local communities. Well done everyone!
